[ARCHIVED] Earthquake Safety Information

earthquakes

Earthquakes are common in Virginia but typically are small enough to go unnoticed.  Most of us, however, remember the 5.8 magnitude quake centered in Central Virginia (Mineral) that was felt throughout the eastern United States on August 23, 2011.

When the next one strikes, will you be ready? Whether at work, home, or on the road knowing and following a few simple steps can keep you, your family, and co-workers safe:

  • Secure loose items and furnishings that could fall.
  • Know where to drop and cover.
  • Have a family communications plan not just for earthquakes but for any emergency that might occur.  Review your plan with each member of your family.
  • If you are driving, stop and pull over avoiding buildings, trees, power lines and overhead wires.  Stay away from overpasses, bridges and ramps. Remain in your vehicle.
  • Be sure you are registered to receive emergency warnings and information on NewKentALERT.  To sign up go to www.co.new-kent.us;  at the top right corner of the page select the link indicated by the alarm bell icon - Sign up for New Kent ALERT.  Tell us how to warn and update you in emergencies.
