Frequently Asked Questions & Schedule
Never attended a New Kent Grand Illumination event? Here are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) so you'll know exactly what to expect:
1. When/what time is the event?
The event will still be held on Sunday, November 27, 3-6pm. Here is the modified plan due to inclement weather expected:
3:00 PM: Event begins in the NEW KENT HISTORIC SCHOOL GYM (11809 New Kent Hwy. – this is a change in location) with Children’s Crafts, Sweet Treats Walk, Candy Cane Scavenger Hunt, Hot Chocolate, Santa Letters, Shopping with Vendors, Silent Auction
3:15 PM: Santa arrives, New Kent style (by New Kent Fire-Rescue fire truck) and makes his way to the gym for pictures with Don’t Blink Photography with Penny
5:30 PM: Illumination of the Historic Courthouse area
The illumination will be streamed live via Facebook but we still encourage families to come out and enjoy the afternoon visiting with Santa, shopping local and more! Bring your umbrella and join us for the County’s kickoff of the holiday season!
2. Where do we park?
Parking is available at the Historic School (11825 New Kent Hwy., New Kent), New Kent Elementary (11705 New Kent Hwy., New Kent), the Courthouse Complex (12007 Courthouse Circle, New Kent).
3. Are dogs allowed?
Due to the change in venue to the Historic School gym, dogs are not permitted.
4. Where are the restrooms located?
Restrooms are located in the lobby area of the Historic School gym.
5. Will Santa be there?
Santa will arrive on a New Kent Fire-Rescue truck and be available after that time for pictures with Don’t Blink Photography with Penny (there is a cost associated with pictures). In addition, all the children on the nice list (even those on the line for the naughty list who are trying to do better) can write a letter to Santa at this event, put it in the Santa mailbox and he will respond in just a few weeks!
6. Ok, so there's lights and Santa. What else?
We'll still have children's activities/crafts (free), local vendors for shopping, silent auction & hot chocolate (these items have a cost associated; some vendors take credit cards, but not all of them).
7. The weather looks bad. Can we watch virtually?
We will Facebook Live the illumination portion of the day so you won't miss the main event!
