New Kent University
New Kent University (NKU), a 10-week citizen education and engagement program geared toward those interested in the inner-operations of New Kent County, finished its 16th year in November 2022. The purpose of NKU is to give local residents insight and an overview of how local government operates. The next semester of NKU will begin in September 2023 and will take place at various County buildings during the evening hours. A daytime class option will be held in September 2024.
Through NKU, participants become familiar with the inner workings of several New Kent’s departments and facilities and they get an up-close view of day-to-day government procedure. The class takes a field trip to several Parks and Recreation facilities, the airport and the Visitors & Commerce Center, among others. One location that most students enjoy particularly is the County’s wastewater treatment facility. Many who visit the Parham Landing facility say they see County water in a whole new light.
Several department heads from New Kent Public Utilities, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue, Economic Development and the like, offer presentations to participants of the University. The goal is to build a bridge of understanding and mutual respect between New Kent County residents and the County government. In NKU’s inaugural year in 2007, one participant said, “The fact that the County began the program speaks volumes about the pride of our elected and appointed county officials and their employees.”
Staff and elected officials are committed to making New Kent University an on-going, annual educational opportunity that will continue to be an experience to remember.
The once-a-year university is offered free of charge as a public service to those who live or work in the County, on a first-come, first-serve basis for those who fill out a registration form. Enrollment is limited to 15 participants. Those who wish to be added to the contact list for 2023 or 2024, depending on their availability for a daytime or evening class schedule, may contact Public Relations Specialist Krista Eutsey at kmeutsey@newkent-va.us or (804) 557-3200.
