Responsibilities
The County Treasurer is the custodian of all public monies of the County. The Office of the Treasurer is responsible for ensuring that local funds are collected, received, invested, safeguarded and properly disbursed.
The Treasurer is a constitutional officer who reports directly to the citizens of New Kent County. The Treasurer is elected every four years by citizens of the locality they serve.
Virginia’s city and county treasurers are the chief financial officers for their localities, collecting revenues and local fees, and making payments on behalf of the local government. The Treasurer is directly responsible for tax collection and provides general oversight and custody of all other funds collected by the County including:
- Personal property taxes
- Real estate taxes
- State estimated taxes
- Public utility charges
- Court, Sheriff and Clerk Fees
- License taxes
- Permit fees
- Dog licenses

The Treasurer’s Office windows will close at 3:30 pm on the last business day of each month in order to balance the registers and make bank deposits on time. We apologize for any inconvenience. Tax and utility payments can be made online at www.NewKentTax.com or payment can be placed in the dropbox located in the Courthouse parking lot by midnight of the due date and considered on time.
