Coronavirus (COVID-19) update:
New Kent Department of Public Utilities (DPU) wants to reassure public utility customers regarding the safety and security of the public water supply amid the COVID-19 outbreak. All New Kent DPU water systems are disinfected at the source with sodium hypochlorite solution (commonly known as liquid chlorine bleach) and are in compliance with EPA’s “Groundwater Rule” (http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/…/office-of-d…/groundwater-rule/). Under the Groundwater Rule, public water supplies sourced from groundwater must provide a minimum of 99.99% perfect inactivation or removal of viruses. The disinfection method already in use in our water systems is expected to be effective for inactivation of coronaviruses when executed properly. Further, our water supplies come straight from deep wells and are never in contact with human hands or open air until they reach your tap.
There is no need to boil drinking water from the public water system at this time. If this were to change DPU will immediately notify the public.
For more information on coronavirus in drinking water visit EPA’s website at https://www.epa.gov/…/coronavirus-and-drinking-water-and-wa… or contact the Department of Public Utilities at (804) 966 -9678.
New Kent customers on public sewer are asked to avoid flushing products other than toilet paper. Disposing of products like disinfecting wipes, baby wipes, paper towels, etc. can cause blockages in the County’s sewer collection system - this includes “flushable wipes.” We thank you for your assistance.
